European regional and structural policy aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion within the EU.

This objective is pursued by promoting growth, innovation and employment at a regional level. Climate protection and sustainable development as well as the promotion of structurally weaker and disadvantaged regions play an important role in European regional and structural policy.

About one third of the total EU budget is used to support companies, research institutions, municipalities and other target groups through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF) and INTERREG programmes.
